The 2nd Generation SVT Lightning was released for the 1999 model year and consecutively ran until 2004. The redesigned lightning featured fresh new styling features and unmatched performance, promising potential buyers the opportunity to own the World’s fastest production pickup for under $30,000. That is right, under $30,000! This red racer was available only as a regular cab, step side model.
An Eaton supercharged 5.4L V-8 provided 360 hp and 440 lb-ft of torque in 1999, and was later upgraded to 380 hp and 450 lb-ft for the 2001 model year. A 4R100 4 speed automatic transmission was borrowed from the Ford Super Duty platform to transmit power to a limited slip 9.75″ rear axle, and traction was maximized by Goodyear rubber at all four corners. The engine was designed by Roush and Ford’s Special Vehicle Team, upgraded with such parts as forged rods, lower compression pistons, and a forged crankshaft. A special sport suspension with Bilstein shocks helped keep the truck planted through corners and high speed antics.
What you need to keep in mind is that this Ford was the fastest production pickup of it’s time and still remains unchallenged today. Yes, it is true that the 2018 Ford Raptor has 450 horsepower with 510 foot pound of torque from it’s 3.5-liter EcoBoost V-6 but you need to keep in mind that the Raptor is a 4WD and geared entirely differently than the SVT Lightning. While I would take a Raptor any day of the week rain or shine, if I had the desire to scare the heck out of someone at a traffic light then the Lightning is the truck for me.
