Mosler Consulier GTP/Intruder/Raptor

I have been around more automobiles than I can possibly remember and while some of them are very memorable there is one that sticks in my memory but not because of the way it looks, OH HELL NO! This car is definitely not something that you want to take out to impress your date for the night because one look at this thing and your date could end very quickly. However, if your date appreciates a sports car for how it handles then, on the other hand, you are good for the night.

Now, for the history about this ugly ducking of a car:

The Consulier GTP first appeared in 1985 as a mid-engined, 2,200 pound American sports car that was built in two series.33 The first series sold roughly 70 units and was powered by a Chrysler 2.2 I4 Turbo II engine producing 175 horsepower (not too shabby for a vehicle weighing in at 2,200 pounds). The second version of the GTP made use of the improved Turbo III version of the same engine, which produced 190 horsepower along with a top speed of 155 MPH. While most of the mechanical components were sourced from Chrysler, the chassis was constructed of a fiberglass and foam monocoque (a single shell of two materials compressed/bonded together). The GTP was also the first carbon fiber and Kevlar-bodied vehicle to go into production with no structural metal in the body. The GTP Sport was the base model and the GTP LX added luxury features such as Recaro  seats, VDO instrumentation, Fittipaldi wheels, Alpine sound system, sunroof, leather upholstery, air conditioning, cruise control, power locks, power mirrors, power windows, tilt steering wheel, and wool carpet. Both versions had full instrumentation, in a plain flat-black panel, with eleven gauges in two sizes.

The GTP was successful in IMSA racing for six years and its excellent power to weight ratio is why this car was virtually  unbeatable.22The car was penalized by IMSA with a 300-pound weight penalty before being banned entirely in 1991.

Once Consulier Industries became Mosler Automotive, it was decided to take a few of the cars and make them into hybrids. Some other cars were modified to accept Chevrolet small block V8 engines, which would eventually be used in the Intruder and Raptor. Two separate companies also modified the GTP and installed electric drive components and one of these electric versions was offered by the Dallas, TX based Neiman Marcus Department stores. After all of those details were finalized Mosler then introduced the Intruder44 which was an updated GTP with a new 300 horsepowered Corvette LT1 V8 which was modified by none other than Lingenfelter. This version raced at the Longest Day of Nelson 24-hour race in 1993 and 1994 and won both years. Just like the GTP before it the Intruder was also banned from Nelson Ledges after its dominating 1993–1994 performances. In 1996, a 450 horsepowered Lingenfelter Intruder won Car and Driver magazine’s One Lap of America with ease. 

In 1997 the Intruder became known as the Raptor after being updated with a V-shaped split windshield in order to reduce drag.55 This slightly modified car went on to win the One Lap of America event again in 1997 and 1999. Unfortunately, this car was once again banned from competing in this event. The Intruder version of this car weighed 2,773 pounds and produced 446 horsepower at 5800 rpm and 429 foot pounds of torque at 5000 rpm. The 383 cubic inch (6.3 L) V8 was again modified by Lingenfelter, and the five-speed transaxle utilized came from a Porsche 911 Turbo. Now, here is a funny little tid-bit as most of the mechanical components were still sourced mainly from Chrysler as they had been since 1985 but what I think is unique to this car is the fact that the steering wheel came from a Chrysler minivan, YES A MINIVAN!!! The new split windshield, which was to improve air flow around the car, actually caused visibility problems and blocked some of the air vents. The tested performance of the car included a 3.9 second run to 60 MPH and a 12 second and 115 MPH dash in the quarter mile.

This American sports car proves that you do not have to be the sexiest car at the track as long as you can beat all the other cars out there.
